RSS-IMO

I like RSS feeds because it is an easy way to access information about a lot of different topics without having to go to individual websites. The information is compiled and one can choose what to read.

I find it challenging because I'm interested in a lot of things and I want to read all these articles that come up and I simply don't have the time. After all, I still read cereal boxes. RSS feeds can lead to information overload. On the other hand, I trust that I can learn the skills to skim over lots of things to find the choicest tidbits that I might have missed otherwise.

I ended up setting up an account with Bloglines for library related topics and an account with Google Reader for more personal interests.

Libraries can take advantage of RSS to keep certain sites that are frequently used for reference easily accessible. Staff can stay up dated on new books coming out, author events, the weather, and any other topic that is of interest to them or their patrons. The younger generation (the net generation) is used to accessing information differently and I think that library service will change in the future to reflect this. I think that RSS will play an essential role.

I have not knowingly used RSS before, but it kind of reminds me of Favorites or bookmarks and I've used those for years. RSS allows one to get news quicker without having to visit a lot of different sites thus it is more efficient and more timely, critical elements in a busy life.
